Matariki Market Day
|
Tuesday’s Matariki Market Day was such a magical and happy one, with even the weather contributing to its success. Over 700 family and community members enthusiastically joined in the celebration. Our children and staff were well rewarded by the smiles and pride shown on the faces of our supportive community. Every class and staff member had worked so hard and creatively to host our community with food, art and craft works, nick-nacks and entertaining performances. We feel so positively supported by our school community.

Staff Changes
|
Our happy and busy term ends tomorrow with three changes to our staff going into next term.
|
|
Our amazing and talented Mr Kyle Storey, will begin a period of extended leave (Terms 3 and 4), although he will be attending our student end-of-year celebrations.
|
Our children, staff and community will miss you Kyle, and we thank you for all the special gifts of learning you have shared with us.
|
|
We are very fortunate to have two very talented and caring teachers joining our team from the beginning of next term.
|
They are: Briana Vette, relieving for Kyle Storey while he is on leave, and Isobel Simmons, who will be working with our growing New Entrant population. Both make a perfect fit for our amazing team.
|
|
Many thanks to all our school community for your support this term. It really does take village to raise a child.

Student Reports and Learning Conferences
Please check your Hero email for an important notice that was sent to parents and caregivers on Wednesday. The notice explains what you can expect to see in your child's mid-year report.
|
|
Student reports will be available on Hero from today, Thursday at approximately 3.30 pm.
|
This will be followed by Parent-Teacher Learning Conferences during Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 3. These conferences provide an opportunity for you and your child's teacher to discuss your child's learning, progress, and next steps for the remainder of the year.
|
|
Please get in touch with your child's teacher in the first instance if you are having trouble accessing your child's report / or Hero emails/notifications.

Netball Season Wrap-Up

Our netball season has now come to an end.
|
|
A huge thank you to our star helpers, managers, and coaches for supporting the children throughout the season. We truly appreciate the time, energy, and mahi you have put into developing the children's netball skills and helping make this a successful and enjoyable season for everyone.

Please return your child's netball uniform as soon as possible.

Term Two Wrap-Up from the Home & School
A huge thank you to our amazing school community for your incredible support of our recent Cookie Dough & Croissant Fundraiser! We are thrilled to share that we made a profit of $3,052.75. We were blown away by your generosity. These funds will go towards exciting playground upgrades for our students to enjoy.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Odlums Group for generously providing us with a chiller trailer to transport and keep our frozen goods cold throughout the fundraiser. Your support played an important role in making the event such a success.
|
|
Home & School have also contributed funding towards new gymnastics leotards, which had our students looking fantastic at Gym Sports last Friday.
|
Our team also attended the Basketball Fun Day. A special thank you to Cookie Time for generously donating cookies for our Fair Play Awards, allowing us to recognise students who demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship throughout the day.
|
|
Looking ahead to next term, our popular Nothing Naughty Protein Bars will be back. They will be available to purchase through the online shop during Week 1, so keep an eye out for more details.
|
|
We are looking to run a raffle next term and would love the support of our school community. If you or your business would like to donate an item or service as a raffle prize, we would be incredibly grateful.

Sophie received her award for her growth in self-confidence across all areas of her learning. She approaches every learning opportunity with positivity, eagerness and resilience, and this is reflected in the work she is producing. Sophie shines as a leader, and we are lucky to have her in our classroom.
|
Olive consistently strives for excellence. She works towards her learning goals each day and completes her mahi to a high standard. Olive often goes above and beyond what is expected, showing pride in her work and consistently doing her best. When things get tricky, she is always willing to take on a challenge and keep trying.
|
Louis received his award for always having exemplary behaviour over the years he has attended the Morning Programme. Louis exhibits the David Street School values every single day. He is polite, respectful and quick to offer help. He is friendly, welcoming, and he always starts the day with a smile.
|
Chester is a reliable and independent learner who follows classroom expectations and makes positive choices. Chester's friendly nature and ability to build positive relationships with others make him a valued member of our school community. He sets an excellent example for his peers through his attitude, determination, and commitment to doing his best.
|
August has a strong desire to explore new ideas, has a passion for learning, and a continuous drive to understand the world around him. He asks thoughtful questions, and his natural curiosity brings light and deeper understanding to everyone around him.
|
Oneki consistently shows the value of excellence and responsibility, particularly in Writing. Oneki takes on feedback from her teachers and ensures that she does her best in her learning every single time! Well done, Oneki!
|
|
Madison received her award for consistently demonstrating initiative, creativity, and a community-minded spirit. She goes above and beyond by taking what she has learnt in class and applying it to her life, even creating her own products to help others.
|
Madison's creativity, drive, and willingness to challenge herself are amazing to witness. Keep striving to be the best you can be!

Sadie received her award for showing excellence in everything she does. She is such an incredible role model for all students at DSS. Thank you for always looking out for your friends and being a superstar in class.

Executive Functions Update!
Here’s our next fun activity to try at home.

Developing the working memory
|
|
One way to support the development of our children’s working memory is with daily conversations. As parents, we are always keen to hear about their day.
|
Asking Twenty Questions about your day can be a real drag. Kids will always wonder what it is that you want them to tell you!! Or that big question - “what did you do today?” reply “Nothing much”!
|
You might like to try a more invitational approach. It could go something like this:
|
|
“Let’s share some things about our day with each other - we’ll take turns.”
|
- about something you did that made you happy today
- about an activity you really enjoyed
- three things you are going to do tomorrow
- about something that you found challenging - what did you do?
|
|
|
There are many things you could talk about. The way we engage with our kids makes all the difference.
|
|
|
|
|
|

|
Room 20 Matariki
This term, our class embarked on an exciting inquiry learning journey as we prepared for our Matariki Market. The children asked questions, shared ideas, investigated possibilities, and voted to decide what we would sell. After much discussion, we chose one good and one service—our Magic Paint Brush face painting stall and our delicious Popcorn Stall!
|
Throughout the term, the children explored popcorn flavours, face painting designs, packaging ideas, pricing and financial literacy, and what makes a successful market stall. They also learnt about the significance of Matariki through the beautiful story The Matariki Breakfast by André Ngāpō and created artwork celebrating Matariki and her six daughters.
|
|
Our Market Day was a wonderful success, and the children absolutely loved interacting with our school community and whānau. It was fantastic to see them confidently serving customers, communicating with others, and taking pride in sharing all they had created and learnt. We are incredibly proud of the teamwork, creativity, and enthusiasm they showed throughout the entire experience.

|
Morrinsville Rotary Club and Paperplus Morrinsville are kindly sponsoring prizes to promote reading in our school and other local schools.

Each term, a student from the junior, middle and senior school will be awarded a prize for significant reading progress.
|
|

Congratulations to the following students who received an award for outstanding progress in reading last term.

Lottie received her award because she has a fantastic attitude towards reading. She loves to read and learn new concepts.

Kahleesi received her award for her fantastic attitude towards literacy. She loves having success in her learning and works hard to achieve!

Tyson has become increasingly engaged and has made outstanding progress in his confidence during whole-class reading.
|

Cruze’s curiosity and deep conceptual thinking are a joy to witness.
|
|
He loves to understand how things work and asks thoughtful questions that encourage those around him to think more deeply. It is awesome to see Cruze use that understanding to explain big ideas to others in a variety of ways.

Kowhai Team Enrichment Programme
|
|
|
|
Every Tuesday afternoon, the Kowhai Team takes part in our Enrichment Programme. This exciting opportunity allows students to choose an area they are passionate about and would like to learn more about. By opting into a topic of interest, students are encouraged to follow their curiosity, explore new ideas, and develop new skills.
|
|

The Enrichment Programme supports our school value of curiosity by encouraging students to ask questions, investigate, and discover more about the world around them. It also helps students become self-aware learners as they reflect on their strengths, interests, and learning goals. We have loved seeing students engage enthusiastically in their chosen areas and take ownership of their learning journey. As this is a kowhai team-wide activity, it also allows students to work alongside others that are not in their own PC. This allows more connections and relationships to grow.

EPro8 Waikato Grand Final – Year 5/6 Division - 18 June
|
On 18 June, the EPro8 Waikato Grand Final – Year 5/6 Division was held at Mokoia Intermediate in Rotorua.
|
|
Our David Street School team, JJAR—Jac-Lyn, Jordan, Amelia, and Rachel—achieved an outstanding equal 2nd place!
|
|
Competing against many talented teams from across the Waikato, the students demonstrated exceptional teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills throughout the competition. Their dedication, perseverance, and hard work were rewarded with this fantastic result.
|
|
We are incredibly proud of their achievement and the way they represented David Street School. Congratulations, JJAR, on this outstanding accomplishment! 🏆👏

Congratulations also to Whaea Kate Peddie and Mr Kyle Storey, who have worked alongside JJAR over several weeks, supporting and encouraging the team. They are immensely proud of what the students have achieved.

Gymsport Day 2026
|
Gymsport Day at the Morrinsville Event Centre was a fantastic success and a wonderful opportunity for the students to showcase their skills, teamwork, and determination. They represented themselves and the school with pride, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, respect and courage throughout the day.
|
|
A special highlight was seeing the girls in their new uniforms. They looked fantastic and wore them with great pride.
|
The day was filled with achievement, encouragement, and memorable moments. We are incredibly proud of the effort, commitment, and positive attitude shown by all the students. Their hard work and dedication were evident in every performance, making Gymsport Day a truly successful and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

|
DSS Gymsports Team would like to thank the organisers, judges, volunteers, and supporters for making the day such a success. We appreciate the effort that goes into providing this valuable opportunity for our students and wider school community, and we look forward to participating again next year.

Strengthening the Transition to School
|
Room 17 had visitors from Old Macs last week - two Kaiako Ella and Brianna came to spend the morning in the new entrant space as a way of strengthening their transition to school programme.
|
|
|
|

Room 8 Matariki
|
This term, Room 8 has been engaged in learning focused on our Market Day and Matariki. A key highlight of this unit has been exploring the concepts of rotation and symmetry. Through hands-on investigation, we discovered that rotating a shape involves turning it around a fixed point, while a symmetrical shape is mirrored identically on both sides. To apply these mathematical skills, students designed their own Matariki stars.
|
|
We also explored the cultural significance of Matariki by researching the individual stars within the cluster. This activity focused heavily on developing our literacy skills.
|
|
Students practised reading for information, summarising the key points regarding their chosen star's importance, and applying those findings to their final piece of writing.
|
|
|
