Remembering Mike Hayes, a much-loved Teacher
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Mike Hayes.
Mike dedicated many years of his teaching career to our school, joining David Street School in 1974 until his retirement from full-time teaching in 2004.
He remained a big part of our school community as a relief teacher and later on while working at Coronation Dairy, doing the school lunch orders.
A highly knowledgeable and respected teacher, he was much loved by generations of students, colleagues and families. His contribution to our school and the wider community was significant, and he will be remembered with great affection by the many people whose lives he touched.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends and former colleagues.

Cultural Festival Wednesday 16 September at the Morrinsville Events Centre
This year, the Piako Cultural Festival will take place on Wednesday 16 September at the Morrinsville Events Centre.
Please note: this event does not involve all Kapa Haka students; we will be taking our senior students and a selection of middle school students to perform and represent our school.
Detailed notices with more information were sent home on Tuesday with those students attending.
- All students need to meet in the Ako Kea side of Te Ao Marama on Wednesday, 16th at 8.00 am. We will be travelling to the Morrinsville Events Centre by bus, leaving David St School at 8.30 am to be ready for the mihi whakatau at 9.00 am.
- Children will be given a DSS jacket to wear that morning. They can wear comfortable clothes, e.g tracksuits, not jeans. If anyone needs hair braided, we can do that there.
- We will perform at 1.00 pm.
- Please note the time of performance for our children is a rough guideline and could change. We advise those who wish to watch their children perform to arrive early.
- Permission slips that went home with the notice on Tuesday need to be back by tomorrow, Friday, at the latest.

Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies
What an amazing few weeks it has been for the Kowhai Team! We are incredibly proud of the 124 students who came together to bring Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies to life. After weeks of rehearsals, learning lines, songs and dance moves, our students showed incredible courage (Kia Maia), dedication and teamwork.
There were plenty of laughs, lots of fun and a few moments of nervous excitement along the way! It was wonderful to see the students work together, support one another and enjoy bringing a story to life on stage. From learning their parts to remembering choreography and performing in front of an audience, our students worked incredibly hard and showed what can happen when we put our minds together and give something our best.
The Kowhai Team proudly completed six full shows at Morrinsville College, and what an achievement that was! Seeing all 124 students come together as one team was something very special. We are so proud of the confidence, commitment and enthusiasm they showed throughout the entire production.
A huge thank you goes to all of the Kowhai Team staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. From creating props, organising costumes and backdrops, to getting children into their numerous lines backstage, managing backdrop changes, lights and all of the many logistics that go into running a school production — there was an incredible amount of work happening behind the scenes. Your dedication made the magic on stage possible.
We would also like to say a massive thank you to our parents and whānau for their encouragement and support. From organising children to get to rehearsals and shows, helping with costumes and make-up, learning lines and songs, and cheering them on from the audience, your support made such a difference.
We are incredibly proud of the show we put together. What a wonderful experience and a fantastic memory for our Kowhai Team to share.

Scrap to Story: Character Creation
Room 12 and the Year 4 students have been busy bringing their imaginations to life through our Scrap to Story concept this term!
Working in groups, students have been planning a character that fits one of the three exciting themes: Out of This World, Way Back When or Something’s Gone Wrong. They have been designing and planning their own unique characters, thinking carefully about their character’s appearance, personality and role within a story.
Students are now independently writing a narrative featuring their character, using the ideas they have developed during the planning process. They have also created a setting, problem and solution for their characters, and have been experimenting with compound sentences, adverbial phrases and short, sharp sentences to make their writing more interesting and engaging for the reader.
Alongside their writing, we have begun the exciting process of building our characters from recycled materials, taking inspiration from the creativity and imagination of Wearable Arts.
It has been fantastic to see students experimenting with materials, solving problems and turning everyday recycled items into something completely new. We can’t wait to see their characters come to life!

Food Technologist Visits Juniors
The Kahikatea Team was lucky to have Lucy Barnett from Fonterra visit on Thursday. Lucy is a Food Technologist who creates new products using milk. Lucy taught us what a Food Technologist does and shared the process milk goes through to get from the farm to our supermarkets.
Lucy gave us some coloured water for us to try, and we had to use our senses to work out what flavour it was. One had a tiny bit of sugar in it, and we learned that sugar makes flavours bigger and stronger.
We learned that when we mix flavours, they can make new flavours and become 'flavour friends'. A pinch of salt wakes up our taste buds, and colour can give us a clue about what flavour something might be.
We had so much fun and feel so fortunate to have someone from our school community give up their time to create a fantastic learning experience for our team.

Room 19 Food Technologists
After Lucy Barnett from Fonterra visited us, Room 19 decided to invent some exciting new ice-cream flavours!
We did our market research and had children and adults vote for their top two choices. We then created Galaxy — a space-inspired ice cream with popping candy — and Gingernut ice cream.
Mr Harrop, Mrs Fielding and Mr Marks came along to taste-test our creations. The judges’ votes were two votes for Gingernut and one vote for Galaxy. However, the majority of Room 19 voted for Galaxy!
Our next step is to write to Tip Top to suggest our new flavour creations. So, keep an eye out in a supermarket near you — you might just see a Room 19 ice cream in the freezer one day!

Room 14 Visitor
Room 14 had a very special visitor this week — Tater Tot the Goat!
We are always looking for learning opportunities at David Street School, and this visit provided the perfect real-life connection to our ‘oa’ sound. What better way to remember the sound 'oa' than by meeting a goat?
The children had lots of fun talking about Tater Tot; it was a wonderful opportunity to bring our literacy learning to life.
