Matariki Celebration & Market Day
We warmly invite our school families to join us for our Matariki Celebration and Market Day at David Street School.
|
Matariki marks the Mฤori New Year and is a special time to come together, reflect, celebrate, and connect with whฤnau and friends. We would love you to join us as we share some kai and celebrate this important occasion.
|
This year, our celebration will be a little different. As part of our Matariki learning, your children have been busy creating and preparing items for our Market Day, which will be held during the event. More details will follow soon.

The Morrinsville Lions Club has presented our school with $3000 as a share of the proceeds from the collection and sale of casualty calves, generously donated by local farmers in the area.
|
|
The donation will be allocated to our Electronics and Construction resources for our Science and Technology programmes.
|
The Lions Club has supported our school and others in the district for many years now, making a significant impact on the quality of resources we can provide for our students.
|
|
We urge our farming families to continue their support of the Lions scheme, as the proceeds have such a marked benefit for our community.
|
|
All funds raised by Lions Clubs from the community go back to the community in one way or another.
|
|

Amelia
Amelia received her award for being an amazing helper at Care For Kids. She is always keen to help in any way possible. Amelia is an awesome role model to the younger children, leading by example, always showing respect, care and consideration.

Indie
Indie is a curious learner who asks thoughtful questions and consistently looks for ways to level up her learning. She approaches challenges with enthusiasm and a genuine desire to grow.

Madilyn
Madilyn received her award for consistently demonstrating excellence in all she does. She leads by example, shows initiative, and has really stepped up as a leader within our space. Madilyn goes above and beyond to care for and take pride in our school environment.
Pippa
Pippa has a positive, can-do attitude towards learning. She strives for excellence in all she does and takes on new challenges with courage. Pippa thinks carefully about her learning goals and works hard to level up her learning.
Elayna
Elayna received her award for consistently showing kindness, responsibility, and maturity in all that she does. She sets a wonderful example for others through her positive attitude and thoughtful actions. Elayna approaches every learning opportunity with a smile, resilience, and a desire to learn.

Ryan
Ryan is a fantastic role model in our classroom and consistently shows what it means to do the right thing! He loves to have a laugh and bring joy to those around him, while also knowing when it is time to focus and get on with his mahi. He works exceptionally hard in all areas of his learning with a calm and positive attitude. He is a friend to everyone and a valued member of our classroom.

Missing – David Street School Sports Tops
We are currently missing a number of school sports tops in various colours. These tops are black with a coloured stripe down the side and a small number on the back near the collar.
|
|
We would greatly appreciate it if families could check at home, in bags, wardrobes, and laundry areas for any school sports tops that may be at home.
|
|
If you find any, please return them to the school office as soon as possible.

Building Executive Functions at DSS
|
The DSS team has been building their understanding of executive functions. We have been fortunate to have Jan Stowell, the author of two amazing books, bringing her knowledge to support our journey.
|
|

All people use executive functions every day. They are critical life skills. Strong executive functions are necessary for people to be self-managing and self-regulating. It benefits everyone to help children learn ways to strengthen executive skills.
|
|
|
Cognitive processes (thinking skills) that enable people to:
|
- Make decisions
- Manage their own thinking and behaviour
|
They help us focus our attention and filter distractions. Cognitive flexibility is the ability to pay attention and switch attention from one task to another. Working memory enables us to mentally hold and process information, and inhibitory control allows us to stop an impulse and display a more appropriate response. The executive functions are:

Room 19 has been building their ‘executive function’ of cognitive flexibility.
Cognitive flexibility is the ability to think in different ways, try new strategies, and adapt when learning or solving problems.
|
Through a range of activities, students are learning that there is often more than one way to solve a problem and that mistakes help us grow.
|
|
The class has especially enjoyed riddles and brain teasers, using critical thinking to find clues, make connections, and explain their ideas.
|
It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident in sharing and explaining their thinking.
|
Michael said, “I like the riddles because they make you think. I nearly solved the first one because I said the elephants were squished, but the answer was they were playing squash.”
|
|
Rylyn said, “I have found the riddles a bit hard. I had to really think about what the answer was. The first riddle was easy, but the other ones have been harder, and I know why… it's because we need to keep on learning and stretching our brains.”

Room 10 Learning Executive Function Skills

Hockey Opportunity for Amy and Olivia
Amy and Olivia were recently selected for a fantastic hockey development opportunity. They attended a special training session alongside talented New Zealand Under-21 hockey players, Ella and Greer, as well as Vantage Blacksticks Manager, Dee.
What an amazing experience for both Amy and Olivia.

Kลwhai Team
In the Kowhai Team, we have been learning about Business Studies, with a focus on marketing, financial literacy, and economics.
|
|
As part of our Structured Literacy programme, we used a Descriptive Web to summarise the key ideas from the texts we read.
|
Our reading goal was: "Summarise and draw a reasoned conclusion about the whole text that connects messages, meanings, ideas, and concepts." Through this learning, students practised identifying important information and making connections between different ideas.
|
|
During our literacy rotations, we also explore how words are constructed by breaking them into prefixes, root words, and suffixes. This helps us better understand word meanings, expand our vocabulary, and improve our spelling.

Reading and Creating Meaning: Room 12’s Journey into Sustainability.
|
This term, Room 12 has been learning about sustainability and the impact of single-use plastic on our environment.
|
After reading about plastic pollution, we were feeling a bit down about the impact we were having on our beautiful earth, so we wrote persuasive pieces encouraging others to make more sustainable choices.
|
We also created an effective mural showing the effects of plastic pollution in our oceans.
|
|
Inspired by our learning, we are now excited to apply our knowledge by creating beeswax wraps to sell at the DSS market day at the end of the term as an alternative to single-use plastic!

Room 19 has been researching what to make for our Market Day. We have decided on our two products, but needed help from our Year 6 leaders to know how to make them and what we need to get. Here are some photos of our children collaborating.
