A Community of Courageous Learners

Welcome to David Street School

A very special welcome to our new students, Terra, Anthony, Kreed, Theo and their families. Nau mai, haere mai ki te Kura o Rawiri!

Appointment of New Principal

The board are privileged to announce that following a very thorough interview and selection process, Kim Budd has been appointed as the new Principal of David Street School, commencing in Term 1 of 2027.

We are incredibly excited to welcome Kim to the David Street whaanau. Throughout the process, we were looking for someone who could lead our kura with care, integrity and a strong commitment to our students, staff and wider community. We are confident that Kim is the right person to lead David Street School into its next chapter.
Jason Stevenson
Presiding Member
David Street School Board of Trustees.

Kim Budd has sent the following introduction to our school community.

Building Connections with Lockerbie Village

Our David Street School staff were recently delighted to be invited to Lockerbie Village for an afternoon tea and a tour of the village.
It was a wonderful opportunity to meet, learn more about life at Lockerbie, and explore ways our school community can build meaningful connections with the residents. We are excited about the possibilities.
We look forward to developing this relationship and creating opportunities for our children and the residents of Lockerbie Village to connect, learn from one another and enjoy being part of the same community.

End of Term

It’s hard to believe that Term 4 is just around the corner!
School finishes for Term 3 tomorrow, Friday, at the usual time of 3 pm.

We wish all our families a safe and happy term break, and we look forward to welcoming your children back to school on Monday 12 October.

We’ve included some important Term 4 dates in this newsletter. Please continue to check our fortnightly newsletters for any updates or changes to dates.
To stay well and truly up to date with what’s happening at school, download our FREE school app. We use the app to share important updates and information with our families, and you can also use it to report your child’s absence.
Simply download the app from your app store and search for David Street School once it’s installed.

A Reminder About Parking Around Lockerbie Reserve

A friendly reminder to our school community about parking in Lockerbie Reserve by the David Street School gate entrance. Particularly at the beginning and end of the school day and during after-school activities.
Lockerbie Reserve is a shared community space, not a road/driveway or parking area.

We have received feedback from residents concerned about the number of cars parking in the reserve outside the David Street School gate entrance to Lockerbie.
As well as the dust created by vehicles parking in the area, Lockerbie Reserve is enjoyed by many members of our community — people exercising, walking their dogs and spending time outdoors — as well as our school children arriving at and leaving the school grounds. This is a safety concern.

We understand that pick-up times and after-school activities can be busy, and we really appreciate everyone's patience. Please use the available roadside parking spaces rather than driving or parking within the reserve.

Being good neighbours and taking care of the shared spaces around our school is extremely important to us. Thank you for helping us keep Lockerbie Reserve a safe, welcoming and enjoyable place for everyone.

New Entrants 2027

If you have a preschooler who you are planning to start at David Street School in 2027, please let the school office know.
If you are unsure, or if details have changed since you provided them to the office, please check with the office to confirm we have the correct details. Having this information helps us with our planning and preparation for the year ahead.
Thank you for keeping us informed!

David Street School is a Sun Smart school.

All students are required to wear a school hat during the summer months in Terms 1 and 4.
This applies whenever students are outdoors, especially during break times. Please note that we have a strict “no hat, no play” policy.
Parents purchase and take ownership of their child’s hat; please write your child’s name on the inside. Our school hats are Cancer Society black, wide-brimmed bucket hats featuring an adjustable toggle for sizing.
For those parents still waiting on hats already purchased these will be sent home on Friday.
Please make sure all hats come to school with your children on the first day of Term 4.

Purchasing Hats
From Term 4 onwards, school hats will be available to purchase directly from Harry’s Surf on Thames Street, Morrinsville.
The cost will be $15.00 per hat. Harry’s has placed an order, so there will be plenty of hats available for families to purchase if needed as we head into Term 4.
Thank you for your support and for helping us ensure our students are sun-safe and ready for the warmer months!

🐑 Livestock Day – We Need Some Dads!

We are looking for a few helping hands to set up the rings from 7.30 am. If you’re available to help, we would really appreciate your support in getting everything ready for a fantastic day.
Many hands make light work – thank you in advance!

Piako District Cutlural Festival

On Wednesday our senior and middle school Kapahaka performed at the Piako Kapahaka Festival at the Morrinsville Events Centre. It was an outstanding performance from 64 tamariki who had worked extremely hard. They were a supreme credit to their kaiako, their whaanau, friends and themselves. Our Kapahaka tutors Makoha Pene and Neens Kapea put together an exceptional bracket, including a whakaeke/entrance, poi, waiata, Moteatea/traditional chant, poi and ending with a passionate haka.
We are all super proud of them as their whaanau and wider school community certainly are.
Thank you for your support with our fundraisers during Term 3.
We had incredible results from our raffle and Croissant /Cookie Dough fundraiser.

Scrap to Story – From Rubbish to Remarkable!

This term, the Kauri Team have been putting Curiosity, Creativity and Teamwork into action as part of our Scrap to Story inquiry. Students have been challenged to take everyday discarded materials and transform them into costumes and creations that bring a story to life.
Our Year 4 learners worked from three story starters: Out of This World, Something’s Gone Wrong and Way Back Then. They planned, designed and created costumes using recycled and repurposed materials, solving problems and adapting their ideas along the way in relation to these story starters.
Our Year 3 learners took a different spin on the challenge. Room 9 ventured into The Faraway Tree, Room 10 explored Character Creations, and Room 11 dived Under the Sea.
Throughout the inquiry, students have been Creators, Investigators and Team Players, developing their ability to plan, make, test, problem-solve and improve their designs. They have shown wonderful curiosity and perseverance, discovering that something destined for the rubbish bin can become something truly imaginative.
It has been fantastic to see our learners embrace the challenge and have the courage to try, create and think differently— truly living our Kia Maia – Have Courage motto.
What an incredible collection of stories, characters and creations our Kauri learners have brought to life!
Your purchase of an Entertainment Membership contributes to our outdoor education space. Help us achieve our goal by sharing this link with your friends and family. Thanks for your support!

Hockey Soccer Fun Day

Thank you to all the parent helpers and managers on the day. The children had an amazing day of soccer and hockey. For some, it was an introduction to a new sport.
It was great to see happy faces and fantastic sportsmanship.
