We hope your children have had a great start to Term 4. This is the first newsletter of the term; our newsletters are sent out fortnightly.

Strike Action Thursday 23 October

Reminder: Complete the Strike Day Survey by TOMORROW, 11 am Friday

Possible Strike – Thursday 23 October
|
|
The teachers' union will confirm on Monday, 20 October whether the proposed strike will go ahead.
|
|
If confirmed, David Street School will be closed for instruction on that day, as we cannot run normal classroom programmes.
|
|
A very limited number of staff will be available to supervise (not teach) students who absolutely must attend due to family work commitments.
|
|
To help us plan, please complete the online strike day form by 11am Friday 17 October.
|

Teacher-Only Day: Friday, October 24, 2025

Please note that on Friday, October 24, 2025, our school will be closed to students for a Teacher-Only Day. This day has been designated for teacher professional development, as approved by the Ministry of Education.

Care For Kids is available
For families who require childcare, Care For Kids will be open on this day.
|
|
Bookings are available for caregivers of students enrolled at our school. Please make sure to secure your spot in advance.

Photolife
Student photos have now been uploaded to the Photolife website and are ready to be viewed and ordered.
Photolife is trialling a new system for delivering Key Codes to whānau and caregivers. These codes will be sent via email throughout the day, helping to reduce the wait time for orders sent to the school.
As this is a new process, please remember to check your junk, spam, or promotions folders in case the email has been filtered.

Athletics Day
(Middle/Seniors)
4 November
• Start 9:10am approx
• 12:30 pm Children will break for lunch at this time.
• The Sprint finals and relays are after lunch, start time is
approximately 1.40 pm. All spectators are invited to stay and watch from
the bank.
• Each age group will rotate around in approx. 20-25 min intervals.
Postponement Day is Thursday, 16 November
Notification of postponement due to weather conditions will be made via
our school app and Facebook page on the morning of Athletics Day.

can vary; please arrive early if you are coming to watch.

Weetbix Triathlon
Sunday 7th Dec
If your child is interested in signing up to do the Weetbix Tryathlon, held in Cambridge on the 7th December, then make sure you register with the David Street School group when you go to sign up.
The Weetbix Tryathlon is a fun day where children participate in a swim, run and bike.
|
- 6 year olds (Splash and Dash) 50m swim / 1.5km run
- 7 year olds 50m swim / 4km cycle / 1.5km run
- 8 – 9 year olds 100m swim / 4km cycle / 1.5km run
- 10 – 15 year olds 150m swim / 8km cycle / 1.5 km run

Your children have been working hard on their Art for this year’s calendars. Calendar Art order notices with a unique code for you to order your child’s calendar artwork, will be going home this term.
|
We will let you know via our school App when we send the forms home.
These make fantastic Christmas presents. Calendars, cards, diaries, mouse pads and sketch pads are available to order.

National ShakeOut Drill
Today our whole school participated in the National Earthquake Drill – ShakeOut.
We discussed the Shake Out Drill and the importance of knowing what to do in an earthquake.
You may want to discuss your family plan with your children.

Kauri Team – Keeping Everyone Safe
Thursday 16th of October, was New Zealand’s National ShakeOut Day, and the Kauri Team took part in practising how to Drop, Cover, and Hold to keep ourselves safe during an earthquake.
We also joined in with St John’s CPR Day, learning important skills about how to help others in an emergency.
Learners practised phoning 111, shared their home addresses, and discovered how to stay calm and safe. The highlight of the day was performing CPR on our teddies—keeping the rhythm to the “Baby Shark” song!

It was a fun, hands-on day filled with important safety learning.

Friday Lunches are available on non-Pizza Lunch Days and are delivered to your child's classroom in time for Lunch.

YUMMY STICKERS!
We are still collecting yummy stickers for our school. Drop them into your child's classroom. Last year, with your support, we received over $400 worth of PE equipment!

The Home and School Committee is a dedicated group of parents working to enhance our school’s learning environment through fundraising. Without parent support for our fundraisers, the committee would not be able to support the children and the school in the way they do.
|
|
Thank you, everyone, for supporting the Home and School Committee's Cookie Fridays, Pizza and Sausage Sizzle lunch fundraisers, as well as our Nothing Naughty Bar fundraiser this term. The Home and School, staff, and children truly appreciate it.
|
We are always seeking more committee members. Keep an eye out in the newsletters for upcoming committee meetings; we would love to see some new faces.

|
The Kauri Team have been learning about the writing genre 'Narrative'.
|
These are fictional stories with the purpose of entertaining. They include main characters, a setting, a problem/incident and a solution/conclusion. Some classes have written and created their own narrative books, including a professional-looking front and back cover.
|

We think they look awesome and have been sharing our books with other students in the team.
|

Kauri Team Pickleball Competition Update
|
The Kauri Team Pickleball Competition is well underway!
|
|
Week 1 saw our first enthusiastic teams take to the court during morning tea and lunchtime, showing great teamwork, energy, and sportsmanship. More exciting rounds are set to continue through Week 2, as teams rally their way toward the finals.
|
With a bit of luck (and good weather on our side), we’re hoping to hold the grand finals on Friday 17th October in the afternoon.

Report an Absence

It is very important that you notify us when your child will be absent.
|
There are a couple of ways you can do this:

Did you know you can send absentee notifications quickly & easily to us through the Hero app? This is the simplest & fastest way to let us know when your child will be absent from school.
|

For safety reasons, you must notify us if your child will be away from school. It also saves the office staff a lot of time following up.
