This letter serves to provide a response to you, our school community, with regards to the recent legislative removal of Te Tiriti o Waitangi from the Education and Training Act 2020.
|
The Board of Trustees unanimously agree to continue to be guided by the key principles of
Te Tiriti o Waitangi in pursuit of excellence, student achievement, best practice and embracing Te Ao Māori.

If you have a child starting at David Street School in 2026, please contact the school office on 889-7780 and check if we have your correct details on file.
|
If you have not informed us of your pre-schooler starting in 2026, please also contact the school office so we can enter their details onto our enrolment list.
This will help us with our planning for next year.

Classroom READERS & LIBRARY Books - PLEASE RETURN
We are doing a stocktake of all our Classroom readers and school Library Books.
This is all junior readers, chapter books, journals, and library books.
PLEASE have a look under beds, behind the couch, and in bedrooms for any books that may have gone walkabout.
We don't mind how many you find - we are just keen to have them back!

Calendar Art Orders
|
|
The first round of calendar art orders has been sent home with children. If you ordered after November 12, those orders will be included in the next round. We will let you know when they have arrived and are going home.
|

Important Notice:
Changes to the way we supply our school hats
David Street School is a SunSmart school, and all students are required to wear a school hat during the summer months in Terms 1 and 4. This applies whenever students are outdoors, especially during break times. Please note that we have a strict “no hat, no play” policy.
|
We are updating the way school hats are supplied. In previous years, parents paid an annual $5 maintenance fee, and hats were owned and managed by the school.
|
|
Beginning in 2026, parents will purchase and take ownership of their child’s hat. This change reflects what many other schools are doing and will make the process simpler for the school, more cost-effective for families, and allow students to take responsibility for their own hat.
|
Our new school hats will be Cancer Society black, wide-brimmed bucket hats featuring an adjustable toggle for sizing.
|

How to Purchase

Hats will be available through the school shop or the school office from January 2026 at a cost of $13.00
|

Sizes: Small 50-54 & medium 54-58
|

Parents are asked to purchase their child’s hat at the beginning of the school year from the school shop, or once school opens, from the school office.
|
|
|
|
|
Once purchased, your child’s name will be written on their hat before it is given to them. Hats will belong to each student, and we recommend keeping them in your child’s school bag or in their desk at school.
|
|
|
|
|
|

Care for Kids is taking Bookings for the
December 2025 / January 2026 Holiday Programme

• Please be aware that once your child’s enrolment is confirmed, you will be charged if they are absent unless we have received a minimum of a week’s notice of change.

• We MUST have a completed Safety Form completed on EnrolMy with emergency contacts, pick up persons and any medical conditions we need to be aware of.

Road Patrol students celebrations
Food Drive for Community House – Mon 1 Dec – Fri 5 Dec
Around Christmas time there are always more people who struggle, especially now
with the cost of living going up.
To do our bit to help, we are collecting donations of food from Monday, 1 Dec.
• Our Christmas Sleigh will be set up in the office entrance.
• Children can take their non-perishable food item to their classroom, and we will
collect it during the day and place it in our Christmas.
• Food will be delivered to Community House for distribution.

Dress-Up Day Friday 5 December
We will be having a fun Summer Holiday / Christmas theme dress-up day on Friday, 5 December. Please do not buy anything for your child to wear. We will be using what
we have available at home.

Year 6 Social
|
We invite all year 6 students and their parents to attend this special evening, where the children will showcase their dancing talents. This takes place from 6.30 pm - 8 pm.

We ask that every family bring a small plate of finger food to share.
|
Our Whole School End of Year Celebration & Year 6 Prizegiving
This will start at 9.30 am and takes place in the covered courts.
This is a special morning where all Year 6 students will receive
their graduation certificate.

Reporting Student Progress and Achievement

This will be available via your Hero portal on Friday, 12 December

The New Zealand Curriculum recognises that learning is like a roller coaster. We all learn at different rates, sometimes the learning clicks, and sometimes it takes a little longer. At David Street School we recognise this journey.
|
You will receive an email /Hero post/email from your child's teacher that included a progress statement on how your child's learning is tracking against their year level expectations in Reading, Writing and Maths.
|
|

Oliver
Received his award for being a respectful student who consistently strives for excellence. He shows perseverance, courage and a wonderful attitude to all areas of school life. We are so proud of Oliver and everything he has achieved through hard work.

Indi consistently puts in her best effort across all learning areas. She arrives ready to learn with a positive attitude, and this shows in her progress and completed work. Dexter
Dexter has been a consistent Team Player in Room 9. Every day, he shows kindness and respect towards those around him. Dexter's passion for learning and curiosity have made him an effective leader and a positive role model for others. Most importantly, he takes responsibility as a learner - always challenging himself and staying focused on achieving his goals.

Xander
Xander has grown into an amazing Year 6 leader. We are so proud of the way he has stepped up as a role model. Xander shows that he is a self-aware learner who has taken responsibility for his learning. He has taken on extra responsibilities with pride. Xander has a bright future ahead. Keep up the amazing work!

Elayna
Elayna consistently demonstrates what it means to be both a true team player and a self-aware learner.
In her learning, she actively listens, asks thoughtful questions, and takes on feedback so she can always do her B.E.S.T. (Better Every Single Time).
As a team player, Elayna embodies inclusiveness in all that she does. She helps make our classroom a positive and welcoming place for everyone.
