We have had a wonderful, busy first week of term, and finished off the week with our ANZAC Commemoration yesterday.
|
Term 2 is a busy term of learning, sports, and fun run events. Please take a moment to read through this newsletter and note important dates on your calendar.
|

Cross Country Events
|
We are preparing our fitness for our Cross Country Runs.
|
Please send children to school each day in clothes they can comfortably run in.
|
As part of Cross Country running, we will be holding two separate events:
|
- The first event is an opt-in Cross Country Run for Yrs 3-6, where placings will be recorded. This will be held on Wednesday, 13th May at Campbell Park.
This event is for students who wish to challenge themselves in a more competitive race setting. Participation in this event is optional. Notices will be going home next week.
|
- The second event is a whole-school Fun Run Event at school for all students; no placings will be recorded. This will be held on Friday, 15 May.
- Start time: Approximately 1:15 pm

Children will navigate a fun course featuring tunnels to crawl through, hay bales, mini hurdles, zigzag paths, and hula hoops.
|
|
Please ensure your child comes to school in comfortable clothing for running and crawling.
|
This is also Pink Shirt Day. It would be great to see the children get behind this by wearing something pink on the day
|
|
|
|
|
Pink Shirt Day promotes kindness, inclusion and respect in our schools, workplaces, and communities.
|
At school, we recognise Pink Shirt Day by wearing pink, and we highlight the importance of empathy, friendship, and speaking up when something isn’t right.
|
|
It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to come together and show that kindness counts and that together, we can make a positive difference.
|

Mud Run - Wed 17 June
|
|
Notices went home on Wednesday with those senior children (Years 5/6) who are interested in attending the annual Mud Run held in Ngaruawahia.
|
|
Registrations are now available from the David Street School Shop.
|
|
We are limited to how many children can attend, so please register and pay early to avoid disappointment. Registrations close on 15 May. Register on our David Street School Shop.

Netball
Netball Season is Underway!
|
- All age groups play at Campbell Park on Wednesday afternoon.
For Years 3–6, please check the weekly draw to find your game times and court numbers.
|
|
Draws can change, so we recommend checking them regularly.
|
|

Ice Block Friday - We have a few more to sell. We will be selling them until they are gone.

Yummy Apple Stickers: Don’t forget to remind the kids to bring in their Yummy Apple stickers. By collecting them, we can claim some fantastic sports gear for our school later this year!

ANZAC School Assembly -Thursday 23 April
Yesterday, we held our ANZAC commemoration assembly at school to pay tribute to and remember those who have served our country.
|
|
We were honoured to have RSA service representatives, Paul Hendra and Stan Darlington, present at the assembly. It was also wonderful to see so many families join us.
|
|
As a symbol of remembrance, each class had created wreaths. Representatives from each class laid their wreaths under our flagpole.
|

Morrinsville ANZAC Memorial Service - ANZAC Day, 25 April.
|
We take great pride in having David Street School represented at the Morrinsville ANZAC Memorial Service on ANZAC Day.
|
|
Two of our students, Heath and Ayla, will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in Howie Park, paying tribute to those who served and sacrificed for our country and representing our school at this important community event.

Kauri Team - ANZAC Day Learning
This week, the middle school students have been exploring the significance of ANZAC Day, reflecting on its meaning, and gaining an understanding of what life would have been like for those who served in the war.
|
|
As part of their learning, students participated in a dress-up day, and some were even lucky enough to bake delicious ANZAC biscuits!
|
|
|

Room 17 New Entrants
|
|
Room 17 students have had a wonderful start to Term 2.
|
|
We have been focusing on welcoming our new students, building positive relationships and developing a sense of belonging here at David Street School.
|
|
We have enjoyed exploring our school and learning about how to keep ourselves safe at school. We have had a lot of fun creating some special art, including our self-portraits to display in our classroom. A huge welcome to our newest learners at David Street School. We are excited for a super fun Term ahead.

Room 11 Reading, Writing, and Creating
|
|
|
Our class has been diving into the wonderful world of penguins while reading the delightful story Mr Popper’s Penguins.
|
|
Students have enjoyed following the adventures in the book while also discovering fascinating facts about real penguins and the places they live.
|
We explored penguin poetry, using descriptive language and creativity to bring these amazing birds to life through words.
|
|
To finish off the term and our penguin learning, students created impressive 3D penguin artwork, showcasing both their artistic skills and what they had learned.
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
EPro8 is an exciting engineering and problem-solving competition that challenges students to work collaboratively to complete practical builds using a range of equipment and materials. Initially, 12 teams of four competed in our in-school EPro8 competition, taking on a variety of creative and technical challenges.
|
|
From this round, the top six teams progressed to the school finals, where the competition stepped up another level.
|
After demonstrating fantastic teamwork, resilience, and innovative thinking, our top two teams have now qualified for the inter-school competition. They will compete at the Intermediate next Friday.
|
We are incredibly proud of the effort shown by all students involved and wish our finalists all the best for the next stage.
