A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful Lockerbie Village Knitter Group.
|

Each year, this generous group donates beautifully hand-knitted slippers to help keep our students warm and cosy in the classroom. Their time, care, and craftsmanship make a real difference, especially during the cooler months. We appreciate the effort and love that goes into every pair.

The children were really excited to choose their own pair of slippers to keep in the classroom.

Cross Country Events – Next Week
|
As part of our Cross Country running programme, we will be holding two separate events:
|

Wednesday, 13 May – Campbell Park
|
|
Competitive Cross Country (Years 3–6, opt-in event) - Races begin at 10:30 am
|
This event is for students who wish to challenge themselves in a more competitive race setting. Placings will be recorded.
|
- Children will leave school and walk to Campbell Park at 9:10 am
- All races will start and finish on the middle field
|
7, 8 & 9-year-olds: 1 lap (1km). 10 & 11-year-olds: 2 laps (2km)
|
Order of Races (Boys, then Girls):

- 10-year-olds
- 11-year-olds
- 8-year-olds
- 7-year-olds
- 9-year-olds
|
Friday, 15 May – At School Whole-School Fun Run (All students)
|
|
Start time: Approximately 1:15 pm
|
|
This fun, non-competitive event is for Yr 3-6 students. No placings will be recorded.
|
|
This is a competition event for the juniors, as they do not go to Campbell Park with the older children. The first ten children will be recorded.
|
The junior races will be first, starting with year 2 boys, then year 2 girls, then year 0/1 boys, and year 0/1 girls.
|
|
All children will navigate an exciting course featuring tunnels to crawl through, hay bales, mini hurdles, zigzag paths, and hula hoops.
|
|
The course is roped off, and there are many viewing points for you to watch your child race. The children need to stay with their class group after the run for safety reasons. You are welcome to come over and take a photo with them after their race.
|
|

EPro8 Challenge - DSS take 1st and 2nd place!
|
Two senior school teams of 4 children competed at the Epro8 Inter-school event held at Morrinsville Intermediate on Friday.
|
|
They achieved 1st and 2nd placing and will be heading to the semi-finals in Hamilton this week - an outstanding result!!
|

Term 2 Fundraiser –Cookie Dough and Croissants
|
|
DSS Home & School are selling delicious Frozen Cookie Dough and Croissants to help support our school. The funds raised by our school community make a huge difference in enhancing the overall school environment. This year, the focus is on raising money to upgrade our school's outdoor playground areas.
|
We are starting it next Friday and will run it for three weeks, so look out for information coming soon via our school Facebook page and school App on how this fundraiser will work.
|

Miles received his award for being a courageous learner who sets goals and uses a growth mindset to achieve them. He is a role model, always looking for ways to grow and be his very best.

Room 7
Exploring ANZAC Through Literacy and Inquiry
|
|
|
|
In Weeks 1 and 2, Room 7 has been exploring all things ANZAC, building an understanding of this important part of our history.
|
We began by learning about the roles of soldiers and nurses during the Gallipoli campaign, and used our imaginations to think deeply about what it might have looked like, felt like, and sounded like in that environment.
|
Using this knowledge, students stepped into the shoes of those who served and wrote thoughtful letters home, pretending to be either a soldier or a nurse. Through this writing, we focused on strengthening our literacy skills by incorporating adverbs, linking to our weekly spelling pattern of words ending in “-ly”. It was wonderful to see students experimenting with language to add detail and emotion to their writing.
|
To bring our work to life, we also stained our paper using tea-infused water to give our letters an aged feel. This touch helped students connect more with the past and take pride in presenting their work.
|
|
We are very proud of the empathy, creativity, and effort Room 7 students have shown throughout this learning.
|

Room 14 Exploring Mathematics
|
Room 14 has been learning about fractions this week as part of our mathematics learning. We’ve been exploring the idea that a fraction represents part of a whole, with a special focus on halves. Students are learning that a half means two equal parts and have been practising how to find half of both shapes and groups.
|
|
Through a variety of hands-on materials and activities, students are building their understanding while having fun. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they explore and make sense of this important mathematical concept!

Seniors
Exploring Persuasive Language and Visual Communication
Our students are currently exploring the exciting world of marketing and advertising!
|
|
They have been investigating what makes advertisements successful by learning about persuasive language techniques such as emotive language, hyperboles, and puns. They have also explored how colours, visuals, and layout choices can be used to capture attention and influence audiences.
|
|
After completing their planning, students are now beginning the creative process of designing their own marketing posters using Canva.
|
|
We are looking forward to seeing their ideas come to life through visually appealing and persuasive advertisements!
|
|
