Important Announcement from the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees wishes to advise our school whānau and wider community that Brian Harrop will be retiring from his role as Principal of David Street School at the end of 2026.
|
Brian has dedicated many years of outstanding service to our school community, and we sincerely thank him for his commitment, leadership, and the positive impact he has made on generations of students, staff, and whānau. His contribution to David Street School has been significant and deeply appreciated.
|

The Board will begin the recruitment process to appoint a new Principal in the coming weeks and will keep the community informed throughout this process.
|

The Arnold family were recently presented with a generous $500 donation after selling their property through Danielle Callaghan from Harcourts Kevin Deane Real Estate.
|
The donation will go directly towards the Home and School Committee’s Fundraisers.
|
|

Danielle Callaghan from Harcourts Morrinsville has been running a special promotion for David Street School families: “List and sell your property with Danielle and receive a $500 donation towards the Home and School Committee’s Playground Fundraiser.”

EPro8 Semi Finals - DSS make the Finals!
|
On Thursday, 7 May, two of our EPro8 teams competed in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty semi-finals at Maeroa Intermediate.
|
They were accompanied by Mr Storey and Miss Peddie, who have been working with them over these past weeks.
|
|
The JJAR team created a remote-controlled fishing machine that could spin 360 degrees, pull fish out of the water, and drop them into a basket.
|
|
Their hard work paid off, earning them 1st equal place and a spot in the finals in Rotorua!
|
|
The 4 Engineers designed a pirate ship powered by a leaf blower. They performed extremely well throughout the competition and showed fantastic problem-solving skills.
|
Unfortunately, due to an axle being in the wrong position, they finished in 6th place.
|
|
We are incredibly proud of both teams, and they should be very proud of themselves, too! They worked tirelessly right up until the very last second, showing amazing teamwork, perseverance, and creativity.
|

Missing – David Street School Sports Tops
We are currently missing around 30 school sports tops in various colours. These tops are black with a coloured stripe down the side and a small number on the back near the collar.
|
|
We would greatly appreciate it if families could check at home, in bags, wardrobes, and laundry areas for any school sports tops that may be at home.
|
|
If you find any, please return them to the school office as soon as possible.
|

Room 16
Learning reading through Structured Literacy
In our Year 1 class, we love learning to read, and do this through a structured literacy programme that helps us develop strong literacy foundations.
|
We begin each day with a phonological awareness whole class session taught in a specific, logical order (e.g., simple letter-sound relationships to complex syllable patterns), then we move into small group reading lessons and also enjoy a weekly shared book and poem, along with a formal handwriting programme.
|
Room 16 children have been enthusiastic learners and are making impressive progress in their ability to segment (pull apart) and blend (put back together) unknown decodable words, as well as learning many other sight words (which are not decodable).
|
These photos show the children using the letter blocks during our group reading sessions, making and breaking words that they come across in the decodable texts we use during these sessions.
|

We really enjoy learning new words in Room 16 and being able to read harder books so we can be ready for Year 2 next year!
|

Exploring Life Cycles
Room 9 has loved having tadpoles in our classroom over the past few weeks! The children have enjoyed observing the changes as the tadpoles grew and developed, and we were very excited to watch one complete its life cycle and turn into a frog.
|
We have now released our frog into the local pond, where it will have more space and a natural environment to thrive and be happy.
|
|
It has been a wonderful hands-on learning experience for the class, and the children have shown great care and curiosity throughout the process.
|

Senior - Mathematics
Developing Thinking and Problem-Solving Strategies
The Kōwhai Team has been very busy during maths time this term, with a strong focus on developing efficient multiplication and division strategies.
|
We started by exploring how numbers can be broken into place value parts (partitioning), such as separating 635 into 600, 30, and 5. Recently, we have moved on to using written algorithms to solve more complex problems. We have been working hard on solving 3-digit by 2-digit multiplication equations, such as 132 times 24. Alongside this, we are practising word problems to help us identify key information and decide which mathematical operations to use.
|
Some groups have been extended further, building confidence in using an algorithm to divide four-digit numbers by a two-digit number (e.g. 1452 divided by 12). They have been learning to use their place value knowledge and multiplication facts to help them break down these larger numbers and divide them accurately.
|
|
We have really enjoyed sharing our thinking and problem-solving strategies during our lessons, whether working with the teacher on our whiteboards or practising independently.
|

Pink Shirt Day
|
It was fantastic to see a sea of pink throughout the school last Friday as we came together to support Pink Shirt Day. This important day reminds us all to choose kindness, think before we speak, and help create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Thank you to everyone who took part and showed their support!

Whole School Fun Run
Last Friday, we had our whole-school Fun Run, which was once again a highlight of the term, filled with energy, laughter, and plenty of enthusiastic running. It was a big thumbs-up from the tamariki, who gave it their all and had a blast.
A huge thank you to all the parents and whānau who came along to support and cheer them on.

DSS Cross Country Competition
|
Congratulations to all our runners at the DSS Competition Cross Country.
|
|
The top 4 runners have qualified for the Combined Schools Cross Country event, which is next week on Wednesday, 27 May. Notices have gone home with those children.
|

Rugby Netball Fun Day
