17th November 2023 - Term 4 Week 6

From the Principal's Desk

Kia ora koutou katoa

Today we have had Discovery Day attended by 45 students who will start Menzies College for the first time next year. We are expecting to have 38 Year 7 students in 2024. This reflects the low numbers in the contributing schools. There will be two Year 7 classes taught by Mr Hayes and Mr Wirepa, this will be a great start for our new Year 7 students with under 20 in each class. It was also great to have eight students at Discovery Day who will be starting in Year 8 or 9 next year. Thank you to Sharee Knapp for organising the day.
On Monday night Zoe Muir and Anna Smith were presented with their Rotary Young Achiever Awards at a ceremony in Gore. Zoe was recognised for her excellence in athletics, team sports and music while Anna was recognised for her excellence in equestrian. These are two very talented young women who we all feel very proud of.

Thank you to Matt Cook, Tim Landreth and Margie Dale for accompanying a group of 20 Duke of Edinburgh student on a bike riding expedition last weekend. The group explored some of the Central Otago trails, covering over 70km in one day.

As we approach the end of term it is important not to let standards slip. Please ensure your rangatahi (young people) have correct uniform or bring a note to the office if they can’t meet this standard. This includes correct socks.

Good Luck to:
  • The Menzies College Equestrian Team managed by Mrs McKelvie who are competing at the Gore Show Grounds on Sunday. Team members are: Anna Smith, Erin Wallis, Caitlin Wallis, Briar Lee and Zoe Crosswell.
  • The Menzies College Year 7 and 8 Primary Schools Gold team who have qualified for the Southland Primary Schools Golf final tournament on the 23rd November. This team is made up of Zoe Muir, Diesel Ross, Arlo Weston and Ben Geary, and is managed by Bathan Muir.

The Menzies College PTA is running their Christmas Raffle again and welcomes donations of non-perishable grocery items to make up hampers.
By now a Christmas hamper raffle should have made it's way home and out of the school bags of the eldest or only child of each family. It would be appreciated if each family could sell 5 tickets at $2 each. Please ask for extras at the office if you feel you can sell more. Please return all ticket butts, money and grocery items to the school office by December 7th. Unsold tickets must also be returned.
Thank you for supporting the Menzies College PTA Christmas Hamper. The funds raised by our amazing PTA go towards sporting equipment, trips and resources that can be enjoyed by all students, such as picnic tables and trees for our new orchard.

Duke of Edinburgh Rail-trail Bike Trip

On Friday the 10th of November, fifteen Duke of Edinburgh students travelled to Alexandra for a biking trip . We had Mr Cook, Mr Crump, Mr Landreth, Mrs Dale and Mrs McConachie helping us out through the weekend. When we first arrived we drove down to the Alexandra park where we played a number of games including tennis and cricket. We finished up by having pizza for tea.

On Saturday we made our way up to Wedderburn to start the Otago Rail trail and biked back to Alexandra. We biked a total of 70 kilometres that day in 3 hours 54 minutes biking time. We finished on a high, having a BBQ for dinner that fueled many sore and tired bikers. For the last day we decided to bike the Roxburgh Gorge Trail, but high winds and sharp corners left us turning back half-way to change to biking across the dam, on the opposite side of the river. This section was only 15 km long and it took 47 minutes biking time. This trip was very enjoyable for everyone and we all had plenty of fun. This biking trip is definitely one to recommend to others who are keen to join Duke of Edinburgh, as it is easy-going for all types of biking abilities.

Big Day Out

On Thursday 16th November, fifteen Year 9 and 10 students attended the Big Day Out in Gore.

It was a fun day out where students could try out a range of sports including:
Indoor Bowls, Squash, Pool, Ice Skating, Ice Hockey, Futsal, Gym, Archery Tag and Indoor Cricket.

Everybody had an awesome day. It’s great for the students to be given the opportunity to try out a whole range of sports and interact with students from other local schools.
