21st July 2023 - Term 3 Week 1

From the Principal's Desk

Kia ora koutou katoa

Term 3 heralds the ‘business end’ of the school year. We expect a settled and focused learning environment with interruptions kept to a minimum. Students in Year 11 to 13 need to start planning for exam success. Practice School Exams are scheduled for Week 9 of term starting on Monday the 11th September. Senior students will be given the opportunity to learn revision and exam techniques early this term. We will also have the school open during the second week of the September holidays for tutorials and supported study.
Thank you for all the support for performers from Menzies College at the Māruawai Matariki
celebrations. We feel very proud of them and grateful to Peter Power, Samantha Johnstone and Lachie Hayes who have put in hundreds of hours to help coach and facilitate the performances.

Thank you to Sarah White for giving up her holidays to coach the Menzies Development Netball Team at the South Island Junior Secondary Schools Tournament in Christchurch. The team were fantastic ambassadors for Menzies College and were runner up for the team sportsmanship award for the Year 9 and 10 Combined grade of 32 students. The team finished Ninth with six wins and two losses.

We have confirmed with Uniform Group that they will continue to stock the Menzies
College uniform in their new store in Invercargill once H&J Smiths exits the market.

Congratulations to:

  • Shaelin Moir for representing the Kahui Ako as the model for the wearable art
entry in the Matariki fashion show.
  • At the recent Division 2 Short Course Swimming Championships in Blenheim, Jacob Stuck gained personal best times in 50m Freestyle and Backstroke. Lachie Shepherd gained personal best times in 50m Freestyle, Butterfly and Backstroke as well as in 100m Freestyle and Backstroke. Sophie Ross gained personal best times in 50m Freestyle, Butterfly and Backstroke as well as in 100m Freestyle, Backstroke and in 200m Freestyle. Menzies participation at the Māruawai Matariki Festival

Menzies dominated the 2023 Māruawai Matariki Festival, on Friday 14th July, with a large number of performers. This included two Kapa Haka groups and bands, singers, dancers and more. The event was slick and well attended with numbers in the thousands. Everyone who attended had positive feedback and was well fed.
A big thank you to all of the event founders and organisers, including our own Peter Power - thank you Peter for the work you put into organising and preparing our performers and stage managing on the night.

Career Fest – Southland

Career Fest will be held in the ILT Stadium Southland, Invercargill on Thursday 27th
July (week 2 Term 3). Menzies College is booked (for all of our year 11 and 12 students) for the Thursday 10am – 12.30pm slot.
Buses will leave school after period one and will be arriving back at around 12.15pm (in time for
lunch). Permission slips were sent home with students on Monday 17th July. It's great to see that so many have been returned already. If you still have one to return please hand this into the office.

Exhibitors on the Day
CareerFest Southland will have a range of exhibitors from across Southland and all over
New Zealand attending the expo on the day, including education providers, industry
training organisations and specialists, corporate and business sector, and government
agencies.
All exhibitors offer a range of services and opportunities for people exploring their future career options. The expo is a fantastic opportunity for our students to investigate their options further and find out just what each organisation has to offer them.
Before we go along, take the opportunity to browse this year's exhibitor profiles,
discover what they have to offer, visit their websites and prepare yourself to get the
most out of the expo in July and firm up your career options.
For more information, visit www.careerfest.co.nz and check out their web page.

Kaiwera Windfarm Blade Display Visit

On Tuesday, 27th June our students were given the opportunity to view a blade from Mercury Energy’s Kaiwera Downs Wind Farm. Mercury Energy had staff members present to answer questions and explain the project to the public. Thanks also to Leanne and David Scobie and their transport team for talking us through the logistics of transporting the components of this project. The share scale of this project is incredibly impressive! Below is a link to the Ensign article covering Menzies' visit to the display.

SISS Junior Netball Tournament 2023

The Menzies College Development team went to Christchurch during the holidays, to compete at the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Netball Tournament. As is common with this annual tournament, we left Wyndham in snow and were met by sunshine in Christchurch.
Eight games in three days were played. We had a loss first up to Cromwell College, which woke us up for the 2 following games, both resulted in wins.
Game one of day two against Queens was a lesson in big losses!!! We went down 44-10. Queens went on to win the competition.
The big loss motivated the girls and they played their hearts out, winning the next five games. The highlight being our final game against Verdon College. This game went into extra time!
It was a pleasure to coach the team and watch their skills develop as the three days went on.
Many thanks to our manager Kath Luoni for navigating us around Christchurch, feeding us well and keeping the scorecards accurate.
