Menzies College Newsletter

4th August 2023 - Term 3 Week 3

From the Principal's Desk

Kia ora koutou katoa

We welcomed recruiters from the Defense Force to speak at assembly last week. They promoted the free training and travel available in the Defense Force which can be an attractive option for school leavers. Menzies has a vision of ‘Connecting Students to their Future’ - careers information
and guidance is a big part of this.
At the moment the Careers Department are following through on the Year 12 students who missed their appointments and starting to meet with all Year 11 students individually. Appointments are emailed to students. Please feel free to contact Stuart Clark if you have questions on behalf of your rangatahi (youth) about careers.

Next week, on Tuesday, we will hold our annual Open Evening to showcase Menzies College to students enrolling for next year. One of the features of this evening is the number of students, usually around 100, who want to assist on the night as guides and helpers. The connection to community and leadership shown by these students is something we are very proud of.

The winter sports season is drawing to an end. Thank you to everyone who has given up their time to support their rangatahi in their chosen sports. We are extremely grateful to coaches, managers and administrators for the countless hours they put in to making this happen. Equally, thank you to parents and caregivers who support the teams by transporting players and paying the bills. It is always exciting to hear of students who have been selected for higher honors. We will publish a summary of representative players in our next newsletter.
Please email the school if there are students who have gained representative honors that we may not know about.

Last Friday Year 7 and 8 Rugby and Netball teams represented Menzies College in the annual Moffett Cup competition. Congratulations to the teams, they showed good sportsmanship and competed with distinction as overall winners of the Moffett Cup. I would also like to thank the older students who volunteered to give back to the competition by umpiring netball and refereeing rugby.

Congratulations to:

  • The Senior Boys Basketball team who won their final in the Eastern Southland Secondary A Grade competition against Northern Southland College last week. This was a great display of skill, sportsmanship and team spirit from both sides. Thank you to Ama Tai for coaching the team this season.
  • Jack Ramage won the Most Promising Mens Under 18 Trophy at the Eastern Southland Basketball Prize Giving and was the top scoring Mens A Grade player.
  • Alyssa Gauldie who competed as part of the Southland team in the New Zealand Gymnastics National Championships in Tauranga during the holidays. Alyssa was 8th Overall and 6th in the Bar in Step 8 of the competition. These are very impressive results and only gained through dedication and hours of practice.
  • Good luck Jack Ramage representing Southland in the Under 23 Basketball Nationals
from 15th -18th August in Auckland

CareerFest Southland 2023

On Thursday the 27th July ,92 Year 11 and 12 students and four Year 13 students attended this event held at Stadium Southland, Invercargill. While there, the students had the opportunity to visit 65 exhibitors, and talk to people in the industry to get some ideas about their future career pathway options.
CareerFest plays a key role in educating for employment, by providing vital links with employers, industry experts, training organisations and tertiary institutions, with the purpose of raising student awareness and encouraging them to make concrete career plans.
It was a very successful event which the students enjoyed, gauging by their comments, survey forms and interest on the day. Many ,in fact, would have liked to have stayed longer.
Thank you to Mr Ritani, Mr Lewis, and Mrs Brown for coming along on the day to help supervise, and to Mrs. Williams for being at the venue to help also.
Mr. Joyce

What's been happening in the Music Room?

The music room received funding to buy four second-hand iMac computers from STAR Funding. This means we can have a lot of students working on their projects at the same time, creating music or sound effects. We are really grateful.

Moffett Cup

On Friday, 28th July we took a Junior Rugby team and a Junior Netball team to Invercargill to compete in the annual Moffett Cup tournament. All players did extremely well and represented the school with pride both on and off the field. The teams both did well with the year 7/8 Rugby team taking out first place in their grade, they went all day unbeaten. The year 7/8 girls Netball took out second place in their division after some very close games, six wins and only one loss in the final by one point.
A huge thank you to Tamarah Morris for coaching and looking after the Netball team, Mr Mark Bennett and Brad Hedges for looking after the Rugby team. We had a large amount of parental support on the sidelines and I would like to thank all parents who came and helped out.
Menzies also supplies the refs for all of the Rugby games each year, this year we had eight amazing students offer to help out. They worked very hard all day and really took the chance to show their leadership skills for the day. Thank you Ollie McKelvie, Floyd Paterson, Cooper Kennedy, Jake Glynn, Lucas van der Straaten, Fletcher Morton, Ben Muir and Hunter McGrouther who stepped up for this role for the day.
