Newsletter Week 6 Term 2

2nd June, 2023

Kia ora ,

We are over half way through the term. Students are well into their learning programmes. Please continue to have conversations about learning and assessment with your students.

The PPTA and MoE are still in negotiations. I would like to thank our community for their patience particularly with the rostering home of students.

Despite the interruptions in 2023 we have managed to fit in our normal events and trips. The term's major events are Pūanga (Matariki falls in the school holidays this year) and the Year 9 Mountain Trip. We also have parent teacher interviews coming up. We look forward to hosting you all to discuss your young person's progress.

I would like to welcome our two new guidance counsellors, Kathy Crawshaw and David Gray, who are doing amazing work and have integrated into our school immediately.

There has been some media coverage about the new NCEA standards and the curriculum changes. Waiheke High School will be engaging with the full new NCEA Level One in 2024. The new literacy and numeracy co-requisites will be administered in 2023. Our teachers are organised and ready for the upcoming changes.

Finally, our solar power project is close to finishing. There is still the opportunity to donate. Details can be found on our website. We have the capacity to continue adding panels for power use in the future.

I hope you are all able to enjoy the long weekend.

Ngā mihi,
Mikaere October

Year 10 Food Multicultural Luncheon

From the Music Department

The Music Department has been busy the past few weeks. Bands 'The Domesday Book' and 'Headless' did us proud performing at the Auckland heats of SmokeFreeRockquest at Auckland Girls Grammar on Saturday 13th May, followed by our NZ Music Month assembly performance on Monday 15th. Sarah Martin recorded her first single track in a professional analogue studio the following Saturday (picture below).
Waiheke High School celebrated New Zealand Music Month by holding a community gig at the Woolshed on Wednesday evening, 24th May, with performances from Yr 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 musicians, who were extremely well supported playing to an appreciative packed house. Many thanks to our own Cheryl Durry and to Amanda McPhail and the Waiheke Dirt Track Committee for letting us use this amazing venue, and also a huge thanks to Jay Kay Pro Audio for his sponsorship and for doing such a professional job on sound and lighting for us.

Graduate Panel, Tertiary Information Sessions, Career Expo and Creative Industries Exhibition

Nine wonderful graduates returned to Waiheke High School on Tuesday to give our Year 10 - 13 students their insights on life beyond school. From universities to specialised colleges and apprenticeship training, our current students benefited from their experiences.

After this, students attended information sessions to gain in-depth knowledge about educational institutions of their choice. Tertiary providers from a wide array fields such as maritime, engineering, healthcare, arts, design and more were available.

Thank you to whānau for attending the Careers Expo and Creative Industries Exhibition that night. Attendees were treated to delicious food and beverages made by our hospitality students. They were able to see the impressive work produced by graduates of Waiheke High School as well as explore educational options linked to their passions, interests, and career aspirations.

We hope that the events on Tuesday have sparked curiosity about the possibilities that lie ahead. Finding a good path takes time, effort, and a willingness to explore. We encourage you to continue engaging with tertiary providers. Many will host Open Days in the coming months:
Alongside the works of past pupils were the recent works of Year 11 and Year 13 Product Design. Year 11 students designed and made rings with a bezel setting and Year 13 students designed chains that played with the notion of 2D and 3D space.

Term 2 Sports Round-Up

The Term 2 Sports Timetable has been up and running with students enjoying the sports available. We have Mr G's Volleyball Academy four mornings a week, which is always popular. Shelley's Fitness every second Tuesday morning is never quiet with at least 20 students taking part and working hard. The weight room is always full with students setting goals and achieving them. Waka Ama is still going strong - teachers and students are not afraid of this colder weather.
U15 Girls Rip Rugby
This young team of talented girls have played home and away games and are unbeaten! They are training hard under the guidance of coach Tony Wood and are totally committed to each other and doing the very best for the team and the school. This shows on the field. The school and team would like to thank ArborBros for their sponsorship for a new playing kit for the girls.
Year 9/10 Netball Girls
The girls had their first competition game last Saturday after 3 weeks of grading.
In their first competition game against Takapuna Grammar, our girls were down by 3 goals for most of the game, playing catch up Netball can sometimes put young players under pressure, however our team showed amazing composure and pulled the game back to come out with a 20 all draw. Poppy Harris was awarded player of the game for pulling off two vital intercept's in the last quarter. The school would like to thank Karla Southcombe, Tanique Deacon and Jayne Alexander for their amazing commitment to this team, travelling every Saturday morning with them to the North Harbour Netball courts.
Junior Boys Basketball
This young team of Year 9/10 Boys are having their first season of traveling to the city every Wednesday afternoon to compete against other schools in the Central Auckland area. They are on top of the table at the moment with one close loss and three big wins. A massive thanks to Brett Garrity who has taken on the head coach role. The boys are improving with every game thanks to his coaching, commitment and passion for Basketball.
Girls 1st XI Football
Our girls 1st XI Football team played their first home game of the season on Wednesday versus Michael Park, winning 2-1 thanks to a last minute goal by Dani Robb. The team put on an impressive performance, showing off a huge improvement in skill. Player of the match goes to Ninia Kihi who scored an epic free kick and also put in solid defensive performance. Special mention to our new Goalie Jewel Dick who kept us in the game. Well done girls!!
AIMS Games - Tauranga, September 2023
This year Waiheke High is sending a Futsal and Netball team, as well as two Golfer's and a Gymnast. This is an amazing opportunity for our Year 7/8 kids to experience a week of sports that they will never forget. The level of competition is amazing and will help them grow as young sporting stars. We would like to thank all the wonderful parents who are driving this tournament for our students. A massive thanks to Duana Upchurch who is involved in so much for our community especially when it comes to our children. Good luck to our students competing with your months of training ahead and all the fundraising you will be doing within the community.
UNISS - Hamilton, August 2023
Waiheke High will be competing at UNISS (Upper North Island Secondary School Netball Champs) once again after having four years away from this tournament.
This is an amazing experience where our young team will be competing at a level that will grow their skills as an individual player as well as a team.
The girls have a good solid two months of training ahead to prepare them for this week long tournament. Thanks to Karla Southecombe for your wonderful commitment to this team.

Have a wonderful, healthy, active long weekend everyone!
