Upcoming Focus on Personal Health & Physical Development

Over the next three weeks, one of our learning focuses will be Personal Health & Physical Development.
Responses from our previous Health Curriculum surveys identified that parents would appreciate communication about the content of these lessons.

To acknowledge this, and work alongside our families in teaching our children in this context,
we will send home individual lesson notices before each session.
These notices will detail the lesson content, helping to ensure clarity and avoid any misinterpretations.

We appreciate that this content can touch on sensitive topics for some families.
We want to reassure our families that the main focus of these lessons is to help the children become increasingly responsible for their own health and well-being with the support and guidance of their trusted family members.
We also want to reassure families that we have avoided including any controversial topics, and are not promoting any personal beliefs or agendas.

If you have any questions about these lessons please make a time to talk to or phone your child’s teacher.

Reporting Student Progress and Achievement

The New Zealand Curriculum recognises that learning is like a roller coaster. We all learn at different rates, sometimes the learning clicks, and sometimes it takes a little longer.

At David Street School we recognise this journey. When you log back into your students' HERO learning portal you will find some ‘dials/graphs’ representing Reading, Writing and Maths.

These dials indicate the learning and achievement of a child in relation to our David Street School Learner Pathways. The example below is a Year 4 student performing at their expected level of schooling.
If you have any questions about your child's learning based on the report, you can discuss them at the upcoming learner conversation meetings next week. If you cannot attend, feel free to reach out to your child's teacher via email.

The more stickers we collect, the more sports gear we can get. So start collecting!
Pop your stickers or labels onto the sticker charts that went home with children or collect more sticker charts from the school office, then send your full sticker sheets along to your child's classroom.
Muddy Kids - Change of Clothes
Just a friendly reminder to make sure your children have a spare change of clothes (including undies) in their school bags.

We do keep some spare clothes at school but with all the wet and muddy weather, the office will quickly run out of spare clothes.
We want to avoid making a phone call to you if your child needs a change of clothes.

Wanted Newspapers

Room 12 is in need of newspapers, especially articles about the Olympics. If you have any, please drop them off in Room 12. Thank you so much!

Updated Government Health Guidelines

When should your child stay home from school?

The Government has released new guidelines aimed at helping parents and schools decide whether a child is too sick to attend school or not.
The guidelines suggest keeping your child at home from school if they are too sick to learn and need time to rest and recover. This could include testing positive for COVID-19 or displaying a “symptom of concern” such as a fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, having difficulty breathing, or if they have been diagnosed with an infectious disease.

(Please Note: If your child experiences vomiting or diarrhoea, they should stay home for 48 hours after the last episode to prevent spreading the illness)
When should your child go to school?
The guidelines suggest children are fine to go to school if they have mild respiratory symptoms such as a mild cough, headache or runny nose, (excluding Covid-19), hay fever or allergy symptoms, or non-infectious skin problems. They state children should go to school if “they appear well — they are happy, eating and drinking normally, and can easily focus on learning”.

You can find these guidelines at: https://info.health.nz/pregnancy-children/childhood-conditions/knowing-if-your-child-is-well-enough-to-go-to-school-guidance-for-parents/
