Welcome
A warm welcome to Charlie who joined us at David Street School this week.
Nau mai, haere mai ki te Kura o Rawiri!

Yesterday we held a special new turf assembly to give our children the opportunity to celebrate the new life given to our central courts. Gone are the days of pot-holed, puddled, knee-skinning ash felt replaced by a safe, inviting and multi-purposed courts that we all love.
We also took the opportunity for the children to acknowledge the hard work of the Board of Trustees, the Home and School, and The Lion Foundation for the planning, managing and fundraising for this wonderful resource. We will share some photos of this assembly next week.
Farewell Sadly, we farewell Jon Bettin this week as he is moving to Auckland with his partner to be near family, and to take up new work opportunities they have secured. John has been a wonderful teacher in Room 10 who has inspired a great interest in the world through the arts and across the curriculum. Jon has also led and supported the Kauri team during his time with us. Thank you, Jon, for all you have shared, and we wish you and Darlene every happy success in your new adventures.

Lollies, Lolly Pops, Cakes, Birthday Treats and other celebrations. We have noticed a huge growth in families sharing sweet treats and food with their children’s class in recent times. While this has been made with generous and kind intentions, this practice has become increasingly problematic. Therefore, we will no longer permit the sharing of sweet treats and food in classrooms for the following reasons:
- A great many parents do not allow their children any sugar drinks, treats nor
food for any reason, including health, behavioural reasons or safety of their child.
- Parents say they feel pressure from their children to provide birthday treats because
their friends have.
- Children become ‘hyped up’ after the treat, compromising both learning and
behaviour.
- Schools promote healthy eating
We appreciate your understanding. While sharing sugary treats is no longer allowed at school, we still love hearing about and will continue to acknowledge our students' joyful family celebrations.

Who are the Home & School? The DSS Home & School Committee are a group of parents/caregivers that put together fundraising ideas and events ( Pizza Lunches, Ice Block Wednesdays, Raffles etc..) that benefit our children at school and in the community. Being a member of the Home & School is a meaningful way of supporting your children’s learning.
Who Can Be On The Committee? Any mum or dad, caregiver can join Home and School at any stage of their child's schooling. Being on the committee does not mean you are solely responsible for every fundraising venture that arises. We bring thoughts forward, discuss fundraising ideas and put our collective skills together to come up with some awesome ideas.

David Street School Learners
The Kowhai Team have been investigating Science within sports at the Olympics. The 3 main learning areas were Newton’s 3 laws of Motion, Aerodynamics and Floating and Sinking. We had to read and make sense of new information, we hypothesized and tested, and took action by sharing our new learning with others
Isaac Newton's First Law states that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an external force.
The first law can be seen in badminton because there is a racket that hits the shuttlecock with a pushing force. As a potential energy force, it makes that shuttlecock move forwards and hits the ground, making friction which makes it slow down and makes it come to a stop.
For an object to float or sink you must know about how dense the object is.
Density is how tight, or loose the molecules are packed. For example, a bowling ball is more dense than a ping pong ball because the bowling ball is full of stuff.
A ping pong ball is less dense because it is full of air, making it float. Another reason it floats is because of buoyancy. Buoyancy is the opposite of gravity. Buoyancy is a force that pushes things up and gravity pulls things down.
The ping pong is less dense so buoyancy pulls it up and makes it float on water but the bowling ball is more dense so gravity pulls it under the water.
Another reason is molecules. molecules make up everything around you but are so small you need a microscope to see them. It is also what makes something more or less dense so the ping pong balls molecules are spread out making it less dense.
The bowling ball molecules are jam-packed together making it more dense.
Our Room 17 Junior students have had a wonderful time learning about Paris as a part of their learning around the Olympics. They have worked hard and created some beautiful Eiffel Tower art that they are very proud of.
