|
New Gate Connection with Lockerbie Estate
You may have noticed that we have a new gate between Lockerbie Estate and David Street School. Our school and Lockerbie Estate teamed up to install a shared access gate, making it easier for students, families, and locals to move between the two areas.
|
|
Since then, the gate has been getting plenty of use and has made getting to and from school more convenient for many of our students.
|
It’s also been a great way to help strengthen the connection between the school and Lockerbie, and will also help take some of the pressure off parking at our other entrances.
|
|
We appreciate the collaboration that made this initiative possible and look forward to continuing to build positive connections with the Lockerbie community.
|

Teacher Celebrations
|
|
On Wednesday, we celebrated our three wonderful teachers who have officially graduated. Congratulations to Kacie, Kate, and Hayley on this incredible achievement!

2026 Swimming Cups
|
|
This year we awarded our swimming cups at the end of the swimming season.
|
The recipients of our swimming cups awarded for showing outstanding swimming in our School Swimming Sports and the District Swimming Sports were:

Robb Family Cup Awarded to: Thomas Garrud- all-round champion in boys’ swimming.
|
|
Rogers Cup Awarded to: Jordan Hedley - all-round champion in girls’ swimming.

Together, we sold 720 packets of Hot Cross Buns.
|
- Pizza Lunches: We’ll have two Pizza Days next term (dates to be confirmed).
- Nothing Naughty Bars Fundraiser: We’re looking at bringing back the popular Nothing Naughty Bars as a fundraiser in Term 2! They were a huge hit last year. So keep a lookout for those.
- Yummy Apple Stickers: Don’t forget to remind the kids to bring in their Yummy Apple stickers. By collecting them, we can claim some fantastic sports gear for our school later this year!

Every year, the Home and School Committee give money to each of the classrooms to spend on fun things for the children. Our children are always excited to help choose and receive their new purchases. Thank You Home and School!

Room 21 loves their new hashtag blocks. They are great for developing fine motor skills and a useful activity to have on hand for the colder before school mornings!

Senior Literacy: Creating, Planning, and Sharing
|
The Kowhai Team has been incredibly excited to begin our first proper Make It Monday sessions for the year.
|
These sessions took place over two weeks, allowing students time to fully explore, plan, and create.
|
The first session focused on a discovery phase, where students experimented with new learning experiences and began to make sense of their ideas. While this looks a little different from our usual literacy programme, strong literacy skills are still woven throughout the process. This stage also involved planning their creations.
|
The fun continued during our Taking Action days, where students worked independently or in small groups to bring their ideas to life. Creations included explosion books, self-portrait sketches, 3D-printed designs, stop-motion videos, and puzzle books.
|
|
Students have taken great pride in their work and have been eager to share their creations with others. It has been fantastic to see their creativity, collaboration, and enthusiasm shine through.
|

Room 10 Mathematics
|
Traffic Survey Investigation
|
As part of our maths learning, students carried out a traffic survey on Studholme Street at 10:40 am on a Wednesday, where we counted the number of cars passing the school for ten minutes.
|
We knew, “Safety First”, and wore our high vis-vest, had our first-aid kit and knew to sit well away from the busy street.
|
|
This real-life investigation helped students explore different ways of collecting and recording data, including using tally marks and grouping numbers.
|
We estimated how many we thought would pass, and gosh, how wrong we were! Through this activity, students practised organising their counts efficiently and began to see how grouping numbers (such as in 5s or 10s) can make counting large collections easier than counting in ones. We also looked at number lines, identifying multiples of 5 and 10 and filling in missing numbers.
|
This learning links to students developing skills in counting, grouping, understanding place value, and collecting and organising data. Room 10 loved the real-world investigation and were surprised by how busy the road was!
|

Toa received his award for consistently demonstrating excellence across all areas. He gives 100% to everything he does, approaches challenges with maturity, embodies our values, and serves as a positive role model for others.
Ethan
Ethan shows excellence in all that he does, and is a kind and respectful member of the class.
He consistently shows the school values throughout the day, both in his interactions with others and in his learning.
Oliver
Oliver received his award for the responsibility and determination he shows in all areas of his learning. He is always focused, engaged and ready to challenge himself, putting 100% effort into everything he does.
Alongside this, Oliver is a kind and considerate friend who looks out for others. Keep it up, Oliver!
Lucy
Lucy has shown huge growth in herself as a learner and contributor to our space. She has been an excellent role model for our Year 5 students, and consistently displays the DSS values. We are so proud of how hard she works and how she always pushes herself to achieve excellence and be the best version of herself.

Ryan
Ryan received his award for showing excellence in his work each day. He gives his best effort in all that he does and get along well with his classmates, contributing positively to our classroom environment. Ryan always strives to improve and approaches his learning with a smile.
Emily
Emily makes positive and thoughtful choices day after day. She leads others through her actions, showing what it means to be a true role model. Emily approaches her learning with maturity, determination and a genuine commitment to improving.
Hudsyn
Hudsyn received his award for always striving for excellence. He perseveres with every single learning task and is a role model for other learners around him.

For the past few weeks, we have been learning about Sea Week with the Release Teachers.
|
We learnt about Tides, Ocean, Climate and Human Impacts on the Oceans.
As part of it, we read a book called The Bomb, about learning to do a “bomb” and just being yourself.
|
|
After that, we drew ourselves jumping, diving or bombing off the wharf, thinking about how our body, arms, legs, and hair would look. We drew ourselves jumping into the sea.
|

Room 8 - Literacy
|
|
Room 8 has been busy using their imaginations to bring book characters to life. This has been linked with our reading of the text Magic Library.
|
|
Students have written a creative story explaining the mischief their book character gets up to in their homes.
|
To take our learning further, students have been able to identify a variety of sentence types that make our writing more powerful.
They sure had lots of fun creating the visual side of their art too!

|
|
Room 21 have been working together in small teams to grow our descriptive writing vocabulary. Each group writes down as many exciting words as they can and then collaborate to write a sentence together with a particular focus. The past few weeks, we have been learning how to use adverbs to show our growing vocabulary and to add interest to our writing.

Reading with Rotary Awards

Morrinsville Rotary Club and Paper Plus Morrinsville are kindly sponsoring prizes to promote reading in our school and other local schools.
|
|
Each term, a student from the junior, middle and senior school will be awarded a prize for significant reading progress.
|

Congratulations to the following students who received an award from Rotary & Paper Plus for outstanding progress in reading last term. The winning students receive a voucher to buy a book at Paper Plus and a certificate.

Liam
Liam has a readiness and eagerness with reading. He has made a great improvement in his reading so far, always having his nose to a book.

Savannah
Savannah makes connections between her class learning and Tier 2 learning.
She always comes to her learning sessions with an amazing attitude and ready to learn.

Blake
Blake is showing a real willingness to improve his reading and is putting in consistent effort to build his skills. He approaches tasks with a positive, motivated attitude and is keen to take on feedback to help him grow. The progress he is making is a direct result of this determination, and it has been fantastic to see his confidence developing. We are really proud of the positive change in his attitude and the commitment he is showing towards his learning.

Principals Award: Riley
Riley is a very curious learner who loves exploring new concepts and always wants to take his learning further!
I love his enthusiasm and positive attitude towards new learning, and his ability to keep a discussion flowing by asking thoughtful questions. It is a delight to teach Riley!
