Newsletter 7 December 2023

This is the last newsletter of the year. We would like to thank every member of our school community for their generous support and encouragement throughout the year.
|
|
We look back in amazement at just how far our graduating year 6 students have come in six years with us. The time shared has been precious as they have grown into confident, successful and caring young people with huge talents and dreams. We are confident in their ongoing journey towards becoming whatever they wish to be.
|
A number of families who are about to have their last child leave DSS. We thank you all for your years of support, friendship and loyalty to our school.
|
We also have several members of staff leaving next week:
• Our assistant Caretaker, John Muir, who began at DSS as a young teacher in the 1960’s, became a Principal in other places for many years, and finally returning home to DSS as our well loved carer of grounds, buildings, staff and children. All the best for another happy retirement John.
|
• We also farewell three members of our talented and dedicated learning support team. Kerryanne Mosen, Cathie Peddie, and Adri Venter. All three are exceptional people who have warmly touched the lives of many children and staff over the years. Thank each of you for the significant and positive difference you have made to us all.
|
|
• Farewell also to two recently graduated teachers, Emily Hollis and Breanna Doran. Thank you both for your care and expertise you have shared with us working with our junior children this term.
|
Good news: Our board of Trustees have at last secured Ministry of Education funding to replace our worn out and increasingly dangerous central large court area. This work will begin the day school ends next week, and be completed before school reopens in the new year. Watch this space: The Home and School have plans for further improving this important play space later in the new year.
|
Note: The school grounds will be largely closed off to the public during construction.
|
Our staff wish you all a happy family time over the festive season.

Class placements for 2024 on Hero.
As of tomorrow, class placements for 2024 will be available on Hero.
|
|
To access this information, please log in to your HERO account and select your child.
|
|
Once you have logged in, a drop-down menu will appear, and you can choose the option "My 2024 Class".
|
|
By selecting this option, you will be able to view the assigned teacher and room number for your child's class.
|
|

Reporting Student Progress and Achievement
|
The New Zealand Curriculum recognises that learning is like a roller coaster. We all learn at different rates, sometimes the learning clicks, and sometimes it takes a little longer.
|
|
At David Street School we recognise this journey.
|
|
From tomorrow, when you log back into your students' HERO learning portal (link can be found on our website) you will find some dials/graphs representing Reading, Writing and Maths.
|
|
These dials indicate the learning and achievement of a child in relation to our David Street School Learner Pathways. The example below is a Year 4 student who is performing at their expected level of schooling.
|
|
|
Stationery Lists for 2024
Stationery lists have been loaded onto the school website at the link below.
|
Please note: Some of the Junior classes stationery lists differ from each other. Before purchasing items, please check carefully which Year level and classroom your junior child is in for 2024 and match it with the stationery list.
|
|
Stationery packs will be available from Paper Plus Morrinsville, they provide excellent prices. You can either purchase a pack (which contains all items as a set, at a discounted price) or choose individual items from the list. Call into Paper Plus Morrinsville and they will assist you.

David Street School Investigators
|
|
|
|
Levi, William and Ryan have been designing an Information booklet specifically for students enrolling at DSS.
|
Te Kura O Rawiri - David Street Learner Information booklet highlights the great opportunities for learners.
|
|
This booklet also demonstrates the learning process in action. The boys have been investigators - finding out what was needed, making sense - sorting and deciding on the content and taking action - putting the booklet together. The booklet will be included in our Enrolment packs.
|
|
Congratulations boys - this will be an important part of who we are at David Street school.

Year 6 Leaving Social
|
Our Year 6 leavers celebrated their Leaving Social on Tuesday evening, providing a delightful evening for both students and their families, as well as teachers.
|
As part of a longstanding tradition at David Street School, each Year 6 student received a kowhai tree to symbolise their growth and achievements. This serves as a meaningful memento for the students as they bid farewell to our school community.
|
