Welcome to David Street School
Welcome back to school! We hope your children have had a wonderful start to the term and are settling back into school life.
|
This term, we are delighted to welcome two wonderful teachers to our team: Briana Vette, who joins our senior school, and Isobel Simmons, who joins our junior school. We are thrilled to have them as part of the David Street School community.
|
A very special welcome also to our new students—Carly, Addy, Louka, Jake, Anaiza, Ryder, and Davina—and to their families. Nau mai, haere mai ki te Kura o Rawiri!

Our Learner Conferences concluded this week, and we would like to sincerely thank all parents and caregivers who took the time to meet with their child's teacher. Your support and partnership in your child's learning are greatly appreciated.

The Scholastic Book Fair was held from Monday to Wednesday, and what a fantastic week it was! A huge thank you to everyone who supported the Book Fair. Thanks to your generosity, we have earned approximately $2,400.00 in Scholastic rewards, which will be used to purchase new books for our school library and for classroom Values Awards.
|
|
It was wonderful to see so many children excitedly browsing the books and discovering new favourites. Our dress-up day was also a great success, with plenty of creativity, fun, and smiles. Be sure to check out the photos included in this newsletter!

Important events to note this term
Hockey begins next week on Friday, 7 August, for those children who have signed up, Crazy Hair Day is in Week 6, Senior School Production (Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies) is in Week 7, Cultural Festival and Soccer/Hockey fun-day is in Week 8, PhotoLife school photos are in Week 10.
Term 3 is packed with activities and opportunities for learning. Please check your newsletters every fortnight for important updates.

Morrinsville Combined Schools Livestock Day
Next term, David Street School will be hosting the Morrinsville Combined Schools Livestock Day on Friday, 16 October.

Room 9 Market Day
Towards the end of Term 2, Room 9 was busy preparing for our upcoming Matariki Market Day! The children all worked hard to create a number of tooth fairy pockets to sell. They measured out the material, used a sewing machine to sew it together and created posters to advertise their products.
Alongside creating their products, the class had been developing their persuasive writing skills by writing advertisements to convince customers why they MUST have a tooth fairy pocket. We explored how persuasive writers capture their audience's attention by using rhetorical questions, organising their ideas into paragraphs, and including a clear introduction, main ideas, and a strong conclusion.
It has been wonderful to see the learners become more confident at expressing their ideas and using persuasive language to encourage others to buy their handmade creations.

Ropom 17 - New Entrants
|
The room 17 children are settling in and getting to know each other, they created Whaanau art and represented each member of their Whaanau with a different sized and coloured Koru.

Tree Planting
|
Natasha Bach, the sister of a student at David Street School, was placed top in the prestigious Women in Apprenticeship awards across New Zealand. Natasha is a carpentry apprentice at Fosters in Hamilton.
|
|
As part of her award, Natasha is required to plant a tree at a school or early childhood education centre to mark the occasion.
|
|
We are pleased that she chose David Street School, and three trees have generously been donated by Bunnings for the planting. These have been planted in the area beside the cricket practice nets.
|
|
Katelyn (Natasha’s sister), Natasha, and some senior students planted the trees on Monday afternoon.
|

Senior School Exploring Fractions
The Senior School has been busy exploring the world of fractions! Over the past few weeks, students have been developing their understanding of equivalent fractions, learning how to add fractions, and practising converting fractions into different forms. Through a range of hands-on activities, games, and problem-solving tasks, students have been building their confidence and applying their knowledge in meaningful ways.

The goal we are working on in this activity is 'recognising families of equivalent fractions'.
|
|
You can support your child's learning at home by involving them in everyday activities that use fractions. Baking is a fantastic way to reinforce these concepts—encourage your child to help measure ingredients using cups, half cups, quarter cups, and teaspoons. Ask questions such as, "How many quarter cups make one and a 1/2 cup?" or "What is half of one cup?" These simple conversations help children see how fractions are used in real life while making learning fun and practical.

Please look out for the stickers on individual apples and the cut-out labels on bags of apples. The more stickers we collect, the more FREE sports gear we can get for David Street School.
