Next week promises to be full of special events as we near the end of another fantastic school year. Below is an overview of the key events happening in Week 9.
|

School finishes at 12.30 pm on Monday 16 December.
Reminder: As normal please let the office know if your child will be absent that day.

Classroom READERS & LIBRARY Books - PLEASE RETURN
|
We are doing a stocktake of all our Classroom readers and school Library Books.
|
|
This is all junior readers, chapter books, journals, and library books.
|
|
PLEASE have a look under beds, behind the couch, and in bedrooms for any books that may have gone walkabout.
|
|
We don't mind how many you find - we are just keen to have them back!
|
|

Middle School End-of-Year Fun Day
The Kauri Team is excited to celebrate 2024 with a day filled with fun activities! Students will rotate through:
|
- ‘Amazing Race’ - Water activities - Scooters/scooter boards - Racket sports and basketball on the turf/playground - Quiet spaces for colouring, crafts, and construction (available throughout the day)
|
For the wheels portion, students can scooter, roller skate, or rollerblade (no bikes, skateboards, or other wheeled vehicles). Helmets are mandatory for all students using wheels.
|
Please ensure your child brings:
|
- Togs (or clothes that can get wet) and a towel - A change of clothes - Water bottle - A substantial lunch
We ask that children come to school already sunblocked. Additional sunscreen will be available for reapplication as needed.
|
Yr 6 Social
Our Year 6 students come together for their social event to celebrate this important milestone in their school journey.
Yr 6 children: Please bring a plate of finger food to share, and dress in your best!
Parents of Year 6 children, please join us too and bring along your dancing shoes!
|
Senior School Year 6 Prizegiving, Graduation, and Celebration
|
Time: 9:30 am – 11:00 am (approx.)
|
|
Join us as we celebrate our Year 6 graduates with kapa haka performances, school-wide singing, and awards for outstanding achievements.
|
|
The celebration will be held under the covered courts (weather permitting).
|
All are welcome to join us in recognising and celebrating our Year 6 students.
|
Junior School End-of-Year Wheels and Toys Day
|
We will be celebrating our 2024 school year with a ‘Wheels and Toys’ day on Thursday 12th December. The children can bring their own ‘wheels’ i.e bike, skateboard, scooter, to ride around a designated track. They are also allowed to bring a toy to play with at school, (at their own risk so please discourage ‘special’ or expensive toys from being bought to school). The day will begin at 9 am and there will be a range of play-based activities set up in classrooms and a gymnastics rotation set up in the hall.

Children will park their ‘wheels’ outside their own classroom

Senior students will meet our junior children at the roundabout and offer assistance to those who need it to bring their ‘wheels’ in

The day starts at 9am so the children cannot ride their ‘wheels’ until the bell rings at 9 am.
|

|
Each class will be given a set time to ride their wheels on the under-covered courts.
|

|
There will be a range of activities including: dress up room, arts and crafts room, dance party room, outside play area, construction room, gymnastics, wheels area etc
|

|
The children can move around the activities as they please
|

|
We will stop at 12.15 to pack up and have a picnic lunch under the trees. We will return to our classes after lunch.
|

There is no cost for this day

Whaanau are welcome to come along to share in the activities and have a picnic lunch.

- Start time 1.45 pm. Parents of children receiving a certificate will be contacted by their child's teacher.

Mrs E's Kitchen This Term
|
Friday Lunches are available on non-Pizza Lunch Days and are delivered to your child's classroom in time for Lunch.
|

There are some new yummy options available this term.
|
Mrs E's Kitchen has now closed for orders.
|
The Next Mrs E's Kitchen Lunches will be next week on Friday 13 December. Order by 10 am Thursday 12 December.

Exciting Changes for the Kauri Team in 2025
|
The Kauri Team leadership and staff have been carefully reviewing the structure of our Year 3 and 4 classrooms. We are pleased to share that, starting in 2025, the team will be organised into separate year groups.
|
|
This means there will be three Year 3 classes and three Year 4 classes, replacing the current six composite classrooms.
|
This decision was made after thorough consideration and is supported by several key reasons:
|
- Smoother Transition: Moving from the junior school to middle school can be challenging. While there are natural variations in physical, emotional, social, and academic development within a year level, transitioning from junior school to Year 3 differs significantly from transitioning within the Kauri Team to Year 4.
- Targeted Learning: Separate year groups allow for more focused and accelerated learning, with teaching strategies tailored to the specific needs of each age group.
- Enhanced Math Program: Our new math curriculum is structured to support learning in Year 1–3 and Year 4–6 groupings.
- Leadership Opportunities: This shift will foster leadership development for both Year 3 and Year 4 students, rather than focusing solely on Year 4.

Many parents have suggested this change over the years, especially following the successful restructuring in our junior school.
|
|
Above all, we believe this change will benefit our students, teachers, and whΔnau, creating an enriched and supportive learning environment.
|
|

Class Placements for 2025 on Hero

Starting Monday, class placements for 2025 will be accessible on HERO. To view this information, please follow these steps:
|
- Log in to your HERO account and select your child.
- A drop-down menu will appear – choose the “My 2025 Class” option.
|
By selecting this, you’ll be able to see your child’s assigned teacher and room number. Refer to the image above for a visual guide to the HERO platform.

Reporting Student Progress and Achievement
The New Zealand Curriculum recognises that learning is like a roller coaster. We all learn at different rates, sometimes the learning clicks, and sometimes it takes a little longer.
At David Street School we recognise this journey.
|
From Monday, when you log back into your students' HERO learning portal (link can be found on our website) you will find some dials/graphs representing Reading, Writing and Maths.
|
|
These dials indicate the learning and achievement of a child in relation to our David Street School Learner Pathways. The example below is a Year 4 student who is performing at their expected level of schooling.

Stationery packs will be available from Paper Plus Morrinsville, they provide excellent prices. You can either purchase a pack (which contains all items as a set, at a discounted price) or choose individual items from the list.

David Street School celebrates children who have been showing our values in their behaviour and actions at school. Recipients of the Principals Awards were:

Levi received his award for having a positive attitude in all areas of school life. He is helpful, hard-working, and respectful. Levi strives for excellence in all that he does. He has made outstanding progress in his learning and should be proud of what he has accomplished.
|
Nathan received his award for all-around awesomeness! Nathan is kind, caring and considerate to those around him. He has made wonderful progress in all his learning this year and we are very proud of him! Nathan is going to thrive at Intermediate.
|
Lars received his award for his curiosity and thirst for learning. He asks some very thoughtful questions which shows that he is making clever connections and applying learning to real-life contexts. We love that your brain is always ticking and know that you will be a lifelong learner!
|
|
Matilda received her award for always having a positive attitude towards her learning. She is willing to tackle any problem and consistently pushes herself into the next learning step.
|
Matilda listens to feedback and makes changes to improve her mahi. Keep being awesome!
|
|
Mia consistently demonstrates the David Street values in all areas of school life. Mia is a quiet, courageous and hard-working student who shows genuine respect and care for others. She always helps out when she sees a need and is a role model for her peers.

Reading with Rotary Awards
Morrinsville Rotary Club and Paper Plus Morrinsville are kindly sponsoring prizes to promote reading in our school and other local schools.
Each term a student from the junior, middle and senior school will be awarded a prize for significant reading progress.
|
|
The awards were presented by Jacky Hutchings (Rotary) and Tracey Waite (Paper Plus).
|
Congratulations to the following students who received an award from Rotary & Paper Plus for outstanding progress in reading last term.
The winning students receive a voucher to buy a book at Paper Plus and a certificate.

|
|
Ethan has a wonderful attitude towards his reading, he has become an enthusiastic, determined and self aware reader. He knows what a good reader does and he reads with confidence, listening and fixing it up if it doesn't sound right. His hard work has resulted in wonderful progress!
|
Cooper is so keen to learn. He has made wonderful progress with his reading this year. He loves to share what he has been reading and learning. It is fantastic to see Cooper’s enthusiasm to read. Keep up the amazing work!

Khody Hurley - Principal Award
|
Khody received his award for his engagement, focus and ideas during our Term 4 investigations. He is thinking deeper into improving entrance ways to David Street School. He has been collaborative with all and is eager to share his ideas.
|
|
Elliot has worked hard to improve his reading. He is eager to make choices about the books he reads and the people, he would like to read to. It is great to see Elliot excited in classroom reading activities. Ka pai te mahi!
